Ambo Agricultural Research Center is a prominent federal agricultural research center located in Ambo town, in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It operates under the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and serves the highland and mid-altitude agro-ecological zones of the country. The center has a long history of agricultural innovation and is particularly recognized for its strong wheat and barley improvement programs, contributing significantly to the development of high-yielding, disease-resistant crop varieties adapted to Ethiopian conditions. In addition to cereals, the center also works on pulses, oil crops, and forage development. Ambo Agricultural Research Center conducts multidisciplinary research that includes crop breeding, agronomy, soil fertility management, plant protection, natural resource management, and farming systems research. It evaluates and releases improved crop varieties, develops integrated pest and disease management practices, and promotes sustainable land and water use technologies. The center collaborates closely with regional research institutes, universities, extension services, and farming communities to ensure effective technology dissemination and adoption. Through training, field demonstrations, and partnerships, it plays a vital role in enhancing agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and supporting climate-resilient farming systems in Ethiopia’s highland areas.
