Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) is the principal federal agricultural research organization of Ethiopia, mandated to generate, adapt, and disseminate agricultural technologies that enhance productivity, food security, and sustainable development. Established in 1966 (originally as the Institute of Agricultural Research), EIAR coordinates a nationwide network of federal research centers and works in close collaboration with regional agricultural research institutes. The institute conducts strategic and applied research across diverse agro-ecological zones, addressing key areas such as crop improvement, livestock production, natural resource management, agricultural engineering, biotechnology, and climate-resilient farming systems. EIAR plays a leading role in developing and releasing improved crop varieties, livestock breeds, and integrated agricultural technologies tailored to Ethiopia’s varied farming systems. It integrates multidisciplinary research approaches—including breeding, agronomy, soil science, plant protection, and socioeconomics—to ensure that innovations are practical and responsive to farmers’ needs. Through partnerships with universities, extension services, private seed enterprises, and international research organizations, EIAR promotes effective technology dissemination and capacity building. Its contributions have significantly increased agricultural productivity, strengthened national food security, and supported sustainable rural transformation across Ethiopia.
