The Animal Health Institute (AHI) is a national research institution in Ethiopia dedicated to the study, diagnosis, prevention, and control of animal diseases. It operates under the federal government and plays a central role in safeguarding livestock health, which is vital to Ethiopia’s economy and food security. The institute conducts applied and strategic research on major livestock diseases affecting cattle, sheep, goats, camels, poultry, and other animals. It also serves as a national reference laboratory, providing advanced diagnostic services, disease investigation, and laboratory confirmation to support outbreak response and surveillance programs across the country. In addition to research and diagnostics, the Animal Health Institute contributes to policy development, epidemiological studies, and capacity building in veterinary science. It collaborates with universities, regional laboratories, and international research organizations to strengthen animal health systems and improve disease control strategies. Through laboratory testing, field investigations, training programs, and technical advisory services, AHI supports Ethiopia’s livestock development goals and helps protect public health by addressing zoonotic diseases and improving overall veterinary service delivery.
