The National Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center at Holeta is a specialized federal research institution under the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) focused on advancing biotechnology for Ethiopia’s agricultural development. It originated from the National Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory, which was established to carry out cutting‑edge research in plant, animal, and microbial biotechnology and was later upgraded to a national research center around 2015. The center is located within the Holeta Agricultural Research Center compound (about 29 km west of Addis Ababa) and is designed to serve as a hub of scientific innovation, technology generation, and human resource development in agricultural biotechnology. Its mission is to harness modern biological techniques to improve crop productivity, enhance disease resistance, and support sustainable agricultural practices that align with Ethiopia’s diverse agro‑ecologies. The center’s research encompasses multiple strategic programs including plant biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, and other life‑science disciplines that support the bioeconomy. In the plant biotechnology area, scientists conduct fundamental work on crop genetic resources, develop in vitro propagation protocols for major horticultural crops, and advance genetically enhanced varieties through field trials. The microbial biotechnology program focuses on identifying and utilizing indigenous microbes and their metabolic products for applications in food processing, bio‑organic agriculture, industrial uses, and environmental solutions. In addition to research output, the center plays a role in training postgraduate students, developing starter technologies for industry use, and enabling the translation of research findings into practical applications to benefit farmers, entrepreneurs, and related sectors in Ethiopia.
