The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission (ENEC or ENPC) was established in October 2025 by the Council of Ministers to oversee the peaceful development of nuclear technology, aiming to build 1,200 MW of nuclear capacity by the mid-2030s. It focuses on power generation, industry, and healthcare, with a key partnership with Russia. The commission aims to diversify Ethiopia’s energy mix beyond the current 90% reliance on hydropower, addressing energy security and reducing vulnerability to climate-induced droughts. Beyond electricity, the commission oversees nuclear applications in agriculture, food security, and healthcare.
