Akaki Basic Metal Industry is a historically significant Ethiopian industrial enterprise focused on the manufacture and processing of basic metal products. Established in 1989 originally as the Akaki Spare Parts and Hand Tools Factory, it was later reorganized and renamed Akaki Basic Metal Industry (ABMI) as a share company to expand its production capabilities and better serve both industrial and national needs. ABMI operates as part of the broader state‑owned industrial sector (historically under entities like the Metal and Engineering Corporation and later reorganized under the Ethiopian government’s industrial framework), producing a wide range of metal components, forged parts, castings, and hand‑tools for sectors such as agriculture, construction, sugar processing, cement, textile manufacturing, and other industrial applications. The facility, located southeast of Addis Ababa in the Akaki area, includes multiple workshops — such as foundry, machining, heat treatment, forging, and quality control — enabling it to deliver various cast iron, steel, and non‑ferrous products tailored to domestic industrial demand.
