Werer Agricultural Research Center (WARC), part of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), plays a vital role in advancing agricultural practices in Ethiopia, particularly in the Afar Regional State. Established in 1964, WARC specializes in research related to cotton, oil crops, and irrigated agriculture, focusing on enhancing crop yields and developing pest-resistant varieties, especially for cotton. Covering an extensive area of 300 hectares, the center is equipped with research farms, technology multiplication fields, livestock ranches, and residential facilities for staff. WARC's research initiatives are essential for addressing critical challenges in Ethiopia's agricultural sector, such as pest infestations and drought conditions. Through its work, the center contributes significantly to improving food security and agricultural sustainability in the region. The primary activities of the Werer Agricultural Research Center include breed improvement for sheep, goats, and dairy cattle. The center focuses on enhancing sheep and dairy breeds in the Amibara Woreda, as well as establishing a sheep breeding model village through the selection of high-performing crossbreeds, such as local breeds crossed with Jersey cattle. Additionally, the center works on the adaptation and dissemination of forage varieties, including panicum and elephant grass. The Werer Agricultural Research Center excels in agricultural education, research, and technology transfer.
