Kessem Sugar Factory is indeed a significant development in the Afar Regional State of Ethiopia, situated in the Awash Fentale and Dullecha districts. Initially conceived as part of the Metahara Sugar Factory's expansion, it was later established as an independent project due to its viability and potential for enhancing sugar production in the region. The factory's construction was financed through a substantial loan of $123 million from the Chinese Development Bank, highlighting the collaboration between Ethiopia and China in advancing infrastructure and industrial projects. The construction was carried out by the Chinese company COMPLANT, which has experience in building sugar factories across various countries. Kessem Sugar Factory is expected to play a crucial role in boosting local sugar production, creating jobs, and supporting the agricultural economy in the region by providing a market for sugarcane farmers. Additionally, it contributes to Ethiopia's goal of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production, reducing reliance on imports, and fostering economic growth within the agricultural sector.
