Awash bank was established on February 13, 1995, as the first private commercial bank in Ethiopia following financial sector liberalization, starting with 486 shareholders and Birr 24.2 million in capital. As a leading private bank, it has grown to over 730 branches, billions in assets, and over 15 million customers, while being the first to exceed 1 billion Birr in profit.
